The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC, Tenerife, Spain) invites applications for ONE post-doctoral position in Astrophysics to work with Dr. Ignacio Trujillo Cabrera within the framework of the project “Galaxy evolution from SDSS Stripe 82” (AYA2010-21697-C05-04), financed by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.
The successful candidate will be based at the IAC's headquarters in La Laguna, in a stimulating and keen working environment. The IAC is one of the leading research centres in Spain covering theoretical and observational research and instrumentation across most areas of Astrophysics. It has been selected as one of only eight “Severo Ochoa Centers of Excellence” in research by the Spanish Government, and the only one in Astrophysics. The successful candidate will have access to all telescopic and supercomputing facilities in the Canary Islands, including the 10.4m GTC, as well as to other Spanish facilities, ESO, ESA, and IRAM.
The main purpose of this position is to build and exploit the deepest optical wide-area survey ever conducted combining the present available SDSS data of the Stripe 82 The post-doctoral researcher will scientifically exploit this unique dataset studying the structural properties of the outer regions of the galaxies and the detection and characterization of stellar haloes and tidal streams.
Remuneration: The gross annual salary is 32.886 €
Duration: Two years, starting the first semester 2012
