The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC, Tenerife, Spain) invites applications for ONE post-doctoral position in Astrophysics to work on high spatial resolution studies of centers of galaxies.
The successful candidate will be based at the IAC's headquarters in La Laguna, in a stimulating and keen working environment. The IAC is one of the leading research centres in Spain covering theoretical and observational research and instrumentation across most areas of Astrophysics. It has been selected as one of only eight “Severo Ochoa Centers of Excellence” in research by the Spanish Government, and the only one in Astrophysics. The successful candidate will have access to all telescopic and supercomputing facilities in the Canary Islands, including the 10.4m GTC, as well those by ESO, ESA, and IRAM.
The successful candidate will work within the PARSEC research group of the IAC (http://www.iac.es/proyecto/parsec/main/index.php). Research areas of the group include parsecs scale studies of centers of galaxies in the local Universe, spatially resolved nuclear star formation, and the physics of jets and hot-spots in radio galaxies. The studies relay on sub-arc second resolution data from across the electromagnetic spectrum: adaptive optics and interferometry in the near- to mid- IR range, radio interferometry and HST optical and UV data. The group also work in the development of the first adaptive-optics imager and 3D spectrograph FRIDA (http://www.iac.es/project/frida) for the 10.4m GTC. The planning for the science exploitation of FRIDA is one of our major activities.
The selected candidate is expected to have a leading role in the multi-wavelength high spatial resolution studies, observational or theoretical, on centres of galaxies conducted within the group. Participation in other research areas in and outside the group will be encouraged.
Remuneration: The gross annual salary is 32.886 €
Duration: Two years and nine months.
