The Max-Planck-Institut for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in Garching near Munich, Germany, invites applications for a post-doctoral fellowship to work with Ortwin Gerhard and the Dynamics Group. Our research focusses on the dynamical structure and evolution of galaxies and galactic nuclei, dark matter halos, and the Milky Way. We are looking for an ambitious and highly qualified person with expertise in galactic dynamics and computational research, and with interest in dynamical modelling of galaxies.
The MPE is one of the major German astrophysics research institutes with broad research interests ranging from instrumentation to theory. It is part of an international research center situated in Garching near Munich, on a campus shared with the MPI for Astrophysics, ESO, and several other institutes and university departments. Munich is an attractive international city close to the Bavarian Alps.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in astronomy or physics before starting. The flexible starting date of the fellowship could be as early as summer 2012, with a nominal date of October 2012. The appointment will be for 2 years initially, with possible extension. We offer an attractive working environment, computing resources, and some money for travel. Please send a letter of application with proposed starting date, a brief description of research interests, a curriculum vitae including publication list, and arrange for two letters of reference to be sent, to: Personalabteilung, MPI for Ex. Physics, POB 1312, D-85740 Garching, Germany (email: firstname.lastname@example.org). Formal deadline is February 29, 2012 but applications will be accepted until a suitable candidate is found. The MPE encourages applications from women and minorities.
