The Leibniz-Institut fuer Astrophysik Potsdam (AIP) offers a postdoctoral position for an Optical engineer / Astrophysicist, jointly based at the 3D-spectroscopy programme and the innoFSPEC innovation centre for fibre spectroscopy and sensing.
The successful applicant will be involved in ERASMUS-F, which is a project for the ESO E-ELT key enabling technologies programme. ERASMUS-F studies concepts and develops technologies and laboratory demonstrators for deployable integral-field spectroscopy (IFS). These technologies are aimed for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), possible pathfinder instruments at other facilities and applications of these methods outside astronomy.
Applicants must hold a degree in optical engineering, physics, astronomy, or a related field and are expected to have solid experience in astronomical instrumentation. Expertise in optical design, spectroscopy, and optical fibres would be an asset.
The AIP, an institute of the Leibniz Association (WGL), is located in the beautiful area of Potsdam-Babelsberg, at the border of Berlin. It has a strong record in research and development of astronomical instrumentation and participates in the R&D of the ESO-VLT spectrograph MUSE, the VIRUS-IFUs for HET, and PEPSI for the LBT.
Currently, the position is funded until June 2014, with a possible extension dependent on external grants. The salary is based on the German public service scale (TV-L), which includes health insurance and other benefits. The AIP is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity.
