Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Associate in the Laboratory Astrophysics and Cluster Physics Group of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Jena

The Laboratory Astrophysics and Cluster Physics Group of the MPIA (Heidelberg) working in the Physics Department of the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena is seeking an ambitious, highly qualified postdoctoral researcher to work in any of the following areas: experimental studies on gas-phase condensation and processing of cosmic dust analogs, matrix- and gas-phase spectroscopy of astrophysically relevant molecules, spectroscopy of dust grains, and condensation and chemical reactions in helium droplets.

The Laboratory Astrophysics and Cluster Physics Group of the MPIA is pursuing a wide range of laboratory astrophysical research along these lines, including the development of astrophysically relevant experiments for studying condensation (laser pyrolysis and laser ablation), processing (ion- or UV-irradiation-induced) and spectroscopy of molecular or nanometer-sized species in molecular or particle beams, optical spectroscopy as well as analytical characterization of the generated and spectroscopically recorded species with physical, chemical, and mineralogical methods, and astrophysical interpretation of the results (for more information see http://www.astrolab.uni-jena.de/). The researcher will deal with topical high-vacuum techniques, laser technology, and up-to date characterization methods. In addition, the researcher will have access to different facilities including ion accelerators, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.

Applicants should have a PhD in physics, chemistry or a closely related field. The appointment will be for an initial period of two years with a likely extension to three years, and MPIA provides funds for publications, travel, etc. The available position ranges from independent work within the broad research direction of the Laboratory Astrophysics and Cluster Physics Group to a more project-oriented position.
