Desired starting date: no later than 7 January 2013

The NRC invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (RA) position tenable at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory (DAO) to work independently and in close collaboration with the lead team of the CFHT Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS).

The NGVS, an international collaboration involving over 50 astronomers worldwide, consists of deep, high resolution, ugriz images over the entire extent of the Virgo cluster, for a total sky coverage of 104 square degrees. The data, obtained using ~160 nights of CFHT/MegaCam time, are supplemented with optical spectroscopy as well as UV and NIR images.

In addition to highly competitive benefits and salary, RAs receive support for observing and conference travel, page charges, access to professionally managed computers and to the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre, which is home to the Canadian Virtual Observatory, the CANFAR cloud computing network, and data archives including, e.g., CFHT, CGPS, Gemini, HST and JCMT.

NRC is a leading developer of instrumentation for ground and space-based telescopes (e.g., ALMA, CFHT, Gemini, JCMT, JWST, SKA, TMT), as well as in scientific data preservation, distribution and analysis techniques.   The RA may have opportunities to participate in development or commissioning of new instruments or facilities.

Applicants must have acquired their Ph.D. within the last five years or expect to obtain the degree before taking up the position.  Applications should be made by 1 October 2012, via the process described at the NRC URL provided.
