Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research position at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) to work on a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury program as member of a team led by Dr. Elena Sabbi. The program will perform a wide-mosaic, multi-filter imaging study of the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, the only starburst in the Local Group. This will map the detailed star formation history, identify pre main-sequence stars, build a complete census of star clusters and associations, investigate the role of stellar feedback in shaping a starburst, and probe the universality of the initial mass function. Some time will be available for independent research or new projects in related areas.
The expected start date for the position will be Fall 2013 or earlier. Initial appointments are for one year, with expected renewal up to 3 years (subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding). STScI, located on Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, offers an excellent benefit package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI's pay is commensurate to the year of Ph.D. Questions about the position may be directed to Dr. Roeland van der Marel (marel@stsci.edu).
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree. Technical expertise in one or more of the following areas is desirable: (a) observing experience with HST or ground-based optical/near-IR telescopes, and in particular reduction, analysis and photometry of imaging data; (b) experience in studies of stellar populations, star formation histories, or initial mass functions or nearby star clusters or galaxies.
Applicants are requested to complete an on-line application through our website at http://www.stsci.edu/institute/employment and attach the following materials in the resume upload section (pdf format preferred): curriculum vitae; list of publications; and a brief (1-3 page) statement of research accomplishments and relevant technical experience. Please include #12-0129 in the file name(s). Also, applicants must arrange for three confidential letters of reference, referring to number #12-0129, to be sent directly to careers@stsci.edu . Complete applications received by November 15, 2012, will receive full consideration.
