The Astronomy Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment, to begin as early as 16 August 2013. The area is open as to field, and as to theoretical, observational, or instrumental specialty. We particularly encourage applications from candidates with a strong focus on data-intensive research. In exceptional cases, qualified applicants will be considered for a position at the Associate Professor level.
The department has vibrant research programs in many areas, including cosmology, star and planet formation, interstellar medium, and compact objects. Illinois is a member of the CARMA consortium and maintains a strong program in millimeter astronomy. Data-intensive astronomy is a particular departmental and campus strength: there is an active program in computational astrophysics, and Illinois is a member of the Dark Energy Survey and will host the main data repository for the LSST. The University is also the site of NCSA and the Blue Waters petascale computing system.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Astronomy/Astrophysics or a closely related field. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications. Please create your candidate profile through http://go.illinois.edu/AstroFacultySearch and upload application materials through this system, including your application letter, curriculum vitae, publication list, and statement of research plans. In addition, provide email addresses for three references who can provide letters of recommendation. Note that requests for recommendation letters will be sent no more than 2 business days after submission of the online application, and thus candidates should apply early to allow timely notification of references
To ensure full consideration, all materials (including letters of recommendation) must be submitted by the closing date of 1 November 2012. Although early applications are appreciated and interviews may be conducted before the closing date, no hiring decision will be made until after the closing date.
