Universities Space Research Association (USRA) is inviting applications as a part of the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) program.
SOFIA is a premier observatory for infrared and sub-millimeter astronomy. Our 747-SP aircraft carries a German-made 2.5-meter telescope designed to make sensitive infrared measurements on a variety of astronomical objects. SOFIA will fly at an altitude up to 45,000 feet. SOFIA is a joint project between NASA and German Aerospace Center, DLR. USRA operates the SOFIA Science Center at NASA’s Ames Research Center. The aircraft is based at NASA’s Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale.
USRA is seeking a Visiting Post Doctoral Scientist. This position requires an active research astronomer with a background in observational astronomy or instrumentation. Previous experience in infrared instrumentation and data reduction would be a particular advantage. The Post Doctoral Scientist is expected to pursue research up to 50% time that is relevant to SOFIA. The Post Doctoral Scientist will also participate in the observatory characterization and scientific operation of SOFIA.
