Assistant Professor Brian Metzger invites applications for a postdoctoral position in theoretical high energy astrophysics in the Department of Physics at Columbia University starting on, or before, September 1, 2013. The successful candidate will pursue research into various topics in time-domain astrophysics, such as compact objects; accretion disks; supernovae; gamma-ray bursts; and relativistic outflows. Some preference will be given to applicants with expertise in numerical hydrodynamics; however, all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.
The Columbia Astrophysics Lab offers a vibrant environment for astrophysics research in close proximity to the Department of Astronomy.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in physics or astronomy or an equivalent degree by the date of employment. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Opportunities will be available for international travel and independent research. Initial appointment will be for two years, with a good chance for extension up to three years, depending on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
Qualified applications should submit an academic CV, statement of research interests (3 pages or less), publication list, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent directly to Dr. Brian Metzger (electronic submission to the above email address is strongly preferred).
Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2012 and will continue until the position is filled.
