Job Announcement Text:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral scholar position to work with Prof. Mike Eracleous and collaborators. The successful applicant will join a team working to identify close, supermassive binary black holes through a combination of observational tests. The postdoctoral scholar will be expected to plan and carry out observations related to this project and lead the effort of analyzing the data and publishing the results.

A Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a related field is required, and research experience on active galactic nuclei is highly desirable. In addition, experience with the reduction and analysis of optical/UV spectra of active galaxies and/or imaging of quasar host galaxies would be a significant advantage. The position is for one year initially with an extension for additional years possible. The appointment could start as early as May 2013 (the starting date has some flexibility but it should be no later than early Fall 2013).

Information about the Department can be found at http://www.astro.psu.edu. Penn State has a significant number of researchers studying active galaxies and other accretion-powered systems. It also has strong connections to Chandra, Swift, the Hobby-Eberly Telescope, and LSST.

Applications including CV, publications list, three-page statement of research interests (including past experience and future plans) should be sent to Prof. Eracleous by e-mail at mce@astro.psu.edu. It is important that the application packet is transmitted in a single, self-contained PDF file. In addition, the applicants should arrange for three professional reference letters to be sent to Prof. Eracleous by the same date. The review of applications will begin on November 15th and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants whose application files are complete by that date will receive full consideration. Potential applicants who would like more information about the above are encouraged to contact Prof. Eracleous by e-mail.

Employment will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. Penn State is committed to affirmative action, equal opportunity and the diversity of its workforce.
