Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position in the extragalactic group at the Service d'Astrophysique (SAp) at CEA, Saclay, France. In the framework of the French National Research Agency (ANR), we are studying the properties of the interstellar medium in local universe galaxies in the collaborative project, SYMPATICO (SYnthetic MultiPhase Analysis of The Ism of Cosmic Objects). The successful applicant will work with the team at Saclay as well as the PDR group at Meudon and other Herschel collaborative teams on multiwavelength observations of numerous extragalactic programs we are involved with.
The high sensitivity of the spectroscopy and photometry of the Herschel telescope provide a wealth of detailed spatial information on the interstellar medium within galaxies. In addition to an existing rich Herschel archive, some Herschel programs we are currently involved with include SHINING, the Dwarf Galaxy Survey, the HERITAGE (Magellanic Cloud surveys), HELGA (Andromeda) survey, HeViCS and HeFoCS (Virgo and Fornax surveys), etc. These projects have been under development for years and are now ripe to fully exploit. The postdoc will be encouraged to model the dust and gas properties of galaxies and build programs for followup observations with ground-based telescopes.
The appointment is for 2 years with a likely 3rd year. To apply, please send a CV, publication list and statement of research interests to Dr. Suzanne Madden (suzanne.madden@cea.fr) and arrange to have 3 letters of reference forwarded to the same email address. The deadline for application is december 10, 2012.
