Job Announcement Text:

The University of Illinois invites applications for a postdoctoral scientist position with the Laboratory for Astronomical Imaging (LAI) in association with CARMA (Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy).

CARMA is a novel heterogeneous array consisting of six 10.4-meter, nine 6.1-meter, and eight 3.5 m antennas designed for aperture synthesis imaging of spectral lines and radio continuum emission in the 1.3, 3, and 10 mm atmospheric windows.

In the LAI, CARMA research focuses on the evolution of molecular gas and dust in galaxies, the formation of stars and circumstellar disks, and astrochemistry. Nonetheless, we encourage applicants from all fields, both observers and theorists, to apply since the Astronomy Department at Illinois offers a rich diversity of collaboration and research opportunities that range from SKA, DES, and LSST development to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. The successful applicant will devote a small fraction (10% to 20%) of time to observatory service and will be expected to undertake an independent research program that involves CARMA data and/or complements LAI CARMA science.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Astronomy/Astrophysics or a closely related field. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications. Please create your candidate profile through http://go.illinois.edu/CARMAPostdoc and upload application materials through this system, including your application letter, curriculum vitae, publication list, and statement of research plans (PDF format requested). In addition, provide email addresses for three references who can provide letters of recommendation. Note that requests for recommendation letters are generated automatically upon completion of the online application, and thus candidates should apply early to allow timely notification of references.

To ensure full consideration, all materials (including letters of recommendation) must be submitted by the closing date of 04 January 2013. Although early applications are appreciated and interviews may be conducted before the closing date, no hiring decision will be made until after the closing date. For more information about the Department, LAI, or the search, please contact Leslie Looney (lwl@illinois.edu).

Illinois is an Affirmative Action /Equal Opportunity Employer and welcomes individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and ideas who embrace and value diversity and inclusivity. (www.inclusiveillinois.illinois.edu).
