Announcement
Job Announcement Text:

We invite candidates from all areas of astrophysics and cosmology to apply for a Lecturship/Senior Lecturership tenure-track position in the College of Agriculture, Engineering and Science at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). We are expanding our research profile in the areas of cosmology and observational extragalactic astronomy with significant investments in faculty (including further hires) and postdoctoral research positions. There is generous support for travel and postgraduate students. This is a strategic focus area of the College as it seeks to position UKZN as an international centre of research in this field.

The main vehicle for this initiative is the Astrophysics and Cosmology Research Unit (ACRU) at UKZN. Members of ACRU have interests in theoretical and observational cosmology including large-scale structure, galaxy evolution and the cosmic microwave background, and are actively involved in the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and its polarized upgrade, ACTPol, and will be involved with the Square Kilometer Array and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. ACRU has strong international research links with Princeton University, the Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in India, and the University of Paris. The applicant will have access to major South African telescope facilities, including the Karoo Array Telescope (MeerKAT) and the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). Together with ACRU members the applicant will pursue world-class research through the use of radio, optical and other multi-wavelength datasets for extragalactic astronomy and cosmology studies.

Depending on the background of the successful candidate, the appointment will be made either in the School of Chemistry and Physics or the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science. For the full job requirements and application process, please refer to http://www.acru.ukzn.ac.za/acru_position_2012_2013.html

For more information about the post, including the job profile, please contact either of the Deans & Heads of School by email: kindessa@ukzn.ac.za (CP) or govinder@ukzn.ac.za (MSCS).

The closing date for receipt of applications is 1 December 2012. The University, however, reserves the right to accept late applications or to extend the above date in order to facilitate further searches. Applicants are required to apply on the Vacancies page of the University website at www.ukzn.ac.za
