The Deputy Associate Administrator (DAA) for Research reports directly to the Associate Administrator (AA) for Science Mission Directorate (SMD). The DAA for Research supports the AA, SMD in all programs, personnel and institutional matters. The DAA for Research provides leadership and ensures the overall coordination of science programs inside and outside the Directorate, working closely with the Division Directors, so that they adhere to National, Agency and Directorate policies, guidelines and processes.
Major Duties
The incumbent supports the SMD Associate Administrator (AA) in all Directorate and Agency level activities and may act for the AA as required. Main responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: serves as liaison between the SMD AA’s office and the Earth and Space Science research community by maintaining an active relationship with the scientific and technical communities at large, specifically academic, industrial, and government organizations involved with the development and use of scientific instrumentation, the analysis and interpretation of data, and the planning of future programs in all of the SMD scientific disciplines. Serves as a member of the SMD Science Management Council to ensure the quality of science processes and programs, and proposes recommendations to the Associate Administrator on matters of Directorate policy; advises the Associate Administrator on programmatic, technological, financial, and risk issues pertaining to the progress in science missions; oversees and manages the proper integration of technology efforts within the Directorate; represents the Directorate and the Agency as a member of the scientific community and key representative of the Science Mission Directorate; participates in the Directorate Program Management Council (DPMC) to ensure the quality, integrity, and readiness of the science portions of SMD space missions and recommends to the Associate Administrator on whether or not a mission is ready to move to its next phase; assures proper integration of scientific goals and objectives of science programs by coordinating activities across the NASA Centers, within NASA’s key contractors, and with other federal agencies such as USGS, NOAA, and the White House.
