Gemini Observatory has an immediate opening for a Data Process Developer to join our international team operating two of the world’s premier ground-based telescopes in Hawaii and Chile. We are looking for a talented individual to join our multidisciplinary team at Gemini North in Hilo, Hawaii. The Data Process Developer is a part of a group of eight people based in Hawaii and Chile.
The Data Process Developer will contribute to the design, development, and deployment of data processing routines required to verify data quality and enable scientific analysis for Gemini’s suite of instruments. Specifically, the Data Process Developer in this position will work with the team's scientists on new and current data reduction recipes and routines for the Quality Assessment Pipeline. As required, he or she will work with the team's Lead Software Engineer on the pipeline's core infrastructure. The Data Process Developer will also help test and maintain the current IRAF and Python data reduction software. The Gemini data reduction software and the Quality Assessment Pipeline are critical components of the daily operations, and the data reduction software is a tool that a large fraction of the Gemini user community relies on to prepare their data for science analysis.
Bachelor’s degree in Astronomy, Physics, Computer Science or related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred. Must be familiar with astronomical data and have experience working with UNIX/Linux. Programming experience in Python and with Object-Oriented principles is essential. Experience programming for IRAF or PyRAF is preferred but not required. Knowledge of astronomical data reduction techniques is essential.
