PEKING UNIVERSITY, BEIJING CHINA KAVLI INSTITUTE FOR ASTRONOMY AND ASTROPHYSICS
The Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA) at Peking University (PKU), Beijing, China invites applications for faculty at all levels, starting on Sep 1st, 2013.
KIAA is designed to be an international center of excellence which promotes basic astrophysical research in China. KIAA's programs are focused in three major areas: a) cosmology, first light, galaxy assemblage; b) star and planet formation, inter-stellar and galactic medium; c) gravitational physics and high-energy phenomena. Current recruitment is open to qualified applicants in any of the above branches.
With English as its working language, KIAA is developing an intellectual environment for global scientific exchange. In partnerships with the National Astronomical Observatory and other astronomical centers and departments in China, KIAA is engaged in theoretical and observational initiatives, development and utilization of facilities, education and mentorship of high-quality students, postdocs. KIAA regularly sponsors thematic workshops, conferences, special-topic training programs. KIAA has also established exchange and visiting programs with other Kavli institutes and astrophysical centers around the world.
KIAA seeks candidates who will mesh well with these programs and broaden the scope of its faculty in theory or observations.
RANK: Chair Professors, Senior Research Scientists (tenure professor equivalent), and Members/Research Scientists (tenure-track faculty equivalent). A small number of chaired professor shall be appointed on the basis of major scientific accomplishment or exceptional potential. Tenure faculty/KIAA senior research scientists will be selected based on their scientific leadership and original contribution to their respective fields. Tenure-track KIAA members/research scientists with an initial term appointment of three years and renewable for a second term will be earmarked for promising young talents in emerging fields.
SALARY: depending on qualifications and experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D., or equivalent, in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Sciences or related field completed or expected by effective date, a demonstrated record of research excellence and potential to obtain external funding.
