Peking University, Beijing, China invites applicants for the director of the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA) at Peking University (PKU), Beijing, China, starting on Jan 1st, 2014.
KIAA-PKU is designed to be an international center of excellence which promotes basic research in China. The program of KIAA is focused in the studies of three major areas of astrophysics: a) particle cosmology, first light and galaxy assemblage; b) star and planet formation, inter-stellar and galactic medium; and c) gravitational physics and high-energy phenomena. In the past five years, KIAA has recruited eight faculty and thirteen postdocs from all around the world. The size of KIAA faculty and postdocs is expected to be doubled in the next few years. With English as the working language, KIAA is developing an intellectual environment for global scientific exchange. KIAA has also established partnerships with the National Astronomical Observatories of China, other Kavli institutes, astronomical centers and departments to jointly sponsor research projects, utilize facilities, and supervise some of the best students in China, as well as actively engage in the development of major facilities and associated scientific programs.
Peking University seeks a Director who will provide global vision, scientific leadership and administrative authority for the KIAA.
RANK: Chair Professor.
SALARY: commensurate with qualifications and experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D., or equivalent, in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Sciences or related field.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: major scientific accomplishment, leadership quality, administrative experience, potential to obtain external funding, ability to interface between Chinese and global astronomical communities. Candidates of all nationalities are encouraged to apply. Selection will be made by an international KIAA Director Search Committee that reports to the PKU Provost. Appointment will be made by the President of Peking University.
