Job Announcement Text:

The Astronomy Department at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow to work with Prof. Steven Finkelstein on areas related to observational galaxy evolution at z > 2.  Applicants with experience in this field, including but not limited to imaging and spectroscopic surveys, processing and analyzing large datasets, performing galaxy selection, and spectral energy distribution fitting, are particularly encouraged to apply.

The primary responsibilities of the successful applicant will be to work on areas of research relating to the high-redshift universe, using data from the CANDELS program (candels.ucolick.org), as well as other upcoming deep HST imaging programs.  The applicant will be encouraged to lead followup observations from both the ground and space, including ALMA.  The applicant will be provided with ~50% of their time to work on independent research programs of mutual interest.

UT Austin has a large astronomy department, with expertise in areas from theoretical cosmology to exoplanets, and the applicant will be encouraged to play a role in our departmental community.  The successful applicant will have access to the McDonald Observatory facilities, which includes the 10m HET and 2.7m Harlan J. Smith telescope, as well as the opportunity to be involved with future projects such as HETDEX and the GMT.  Austin is a vibrant city with an active music and cultural scene, and excellent weather allowing year-round outdoor activities.

By the anticipated starting date of September 1st, 2013 (earlier is possible), the applicants should have obtained a Ph.D. in Astronomy or Physics.  The appointment is for a period of three years based on satisfactory performance.  Salary will be commensurate with experience.  UT has an excellent benefits program, which can be viewed at: http://www.utexas.edu/hr/prospective/benefits.html.

Applicants should submit a CV, a list of publications, a statement of current and future research interests, and a list of three people familiar with the applicant's research who can be contacted for letters of reference.  Complete applications received by November 30th, 2012 will receive full consideration.  Applications will be accepted in electronic form only, as a single PDF sent to: stevenf@astro.as.utexas.edu.  Candidates will be contacted for interviews to take place either over the phone or in person at the AAS.  Questions regarding this position should be addressed to Steven Finkelstein at (512) 471-1483 or stevenf@astro.as.utexas.edu.
