The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. (AURA) operates several observatory centers (including the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, the National Solar Observatory, Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and the Gemini Observatory) in the United States and Chile under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation. AURA is accepting applications for a full time Advanced Observing/Nightly Observing Program Coordinator at Kitt Peak National Observatory.

Kitt Peak National Observatory Visitor Center is searching for a full time dynamic individual to coordinate its Advanced and Nightly Observing Programs. The Coordinator develops and conducts educational programs/workshops and maintains all public telescopes.  The Coordinator will supervise, train, schedule and conduct performance reviews for program staff. The schedule includes night hours and weekend work with flexible days.

KPNO is looking for a candidate who has excellent public speaking skills; is able to be a team player and has good organizational skills including the ability to multi task. Candidates should have a strong knowledge of astronomy and must be extremely proficient in CCD imagining and processing with a minimum of three years experience. A Bachelor's degree in Astronomy, Science Education or related field is preferred. Amateur astronomers are encouraged to apply. Essential Functions:

Maintains and operates all the KPVC Telescopes
Supervises, schedules, reviews, and trains all NOP/AOP staff
Meets or exceeds revenue projections
Communicates effectively with all staff
Makes AOP reservations as needed as well as supervising staff who make reservations
Conducts the AOP on a scheduled basis
Answers general NOP, AOP, and astronomy-related inquiries
Handles administrative paperwork and functions for the AOP/NOP
Conducts special tours and gives general assistance to public
Operates cash register and provide sales assistance
Writes Newsletter articles 
Assists with basic building and grounds maintenance
Performs safety and security functions on the mountain as required
Assists with the development of new informal science education public programs
Teaches and develops specialized classes, workshops, and seminars
Conducts meetings as needed

A successful candidate for the AOP/NOP Coordinator position will have:

Strong knowledge in Astronomy with five years of observing experience
Must be extremely proficient with Astro photography and CCD imaging and processing with a minimum of three years experience
Proven image processing skills demonstrated through samples submitted with application
Strong Astronomy knowledge
Five years of supervisory experience
Bachelor's degree in Astronomy, Science Education or related field preferred
Ability to work with the public including proven public speaking skills, and track record of providing excellent customer service resulting in customer satisfaction
Computer knowledge in a PC environment
Ability to work as a team player with other departments and staff
Ability to work a flexible schedule including overnight schedules
Ability to climb stairs and work at 6,800 feet altitude
Ability to lift 50 pounds
CPR Certification is required

The work location is based at Kitt Peak National Observatory, approximately 50 miles southwest of Tucson, Arizona. The successful candidate must be physically capable of working at altitudes of 7,000 feet above sea level. Transportation, meals and lodging are provided.
