Our long-term client relationship with NASA has led to a need for an Orbital Debris (OD) Astronomical Scientist.

 The Orbital Debris Astronomical Scientist will:

Make observations of the man-made orbital debris population in Earth orbit.
Develop, document, integrate, maintain and operate the NASA Orbital Debris Program Office (ODPO) Meter-Class Autonomous Telescope (MCAT) and other telescopes.
Perform physical characterization of resident space objects, including orbit determination, and laboratory specimens.
Work closely with ESCG’s Orbital Debris Research & Science Operations (ODRSO) colleagues and our NASA customer.
Present work products to customers and counterparts in written and verbal formats.
Support and participate in technical interchange meetings.
Perform other duties as required.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

A BS degree in from an accredited university and 8 years experience are required.
Observational experience using visible/IR telescopes.
Experience with telescope hardware and instrumentation such as shutters, mounts, filters, cameras, spectrographs, etc.
Experience with telescope software and integration.
Astrometric/photometric/radiometric data reduction and analysis experience.
Experience with Unix/Linux, a high level computer language, and astronomical applications, e.g. IRAF. 
Ability to travel to remote telescope facilities in domestic and international locations.

Preferences:

A BS degree in astronomy or physics.
10 years relevant experience in a related field.
Ph.D. degree in astronomy or relevant physics discipline.
Experience in observing non-sidereal targets, e.g. planetary, small body, or space surveillance-themed astronomy.
Experience with C/C++, FORTRAN77/95, Python, LabView, MatLab, and IDL.
Experience with spectroscopy and material identification.
Experience with experiment and campaign planning. 
Work effectively in interdisciplinary teams and possess excellent oral and written skills.
Exhibit the qualities of creativity, conception, vision and personal initiative, and will be expected to develop new cooperative relationships and team capabilities.
