Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Planet Formation and Protoplanetary Disc Dynamics
The Astronomy Unit (AU) at Queen Mary University of London has a vacancy for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on the STFC-funded research project entitled “Planet formation in turbulent protoplanetary discs”. The AU’s Planetary Formation and Dynamics group carries out research into planetary formation and dynamics, protoplanetary disc evolution, planetary atmospheres, and the dynamics of Saturnian rings and satellites through involvement in the Cassini mission. We use state of the art numerical simulations, analytic theory, and analysis of data from spacecraft.
The successful applicant will be expected to lead the development of advanced, multi-dimensional models of turbulent, magnetised protoplanetary discs with embedded planets and/or planetesimals.
Applicants should have, or be about to gain, a PhD in Astronomy/Astrophysics with experience in the use and development of MHD/hydrodynamic numerical simulation codes, preferably with application to the dynamical evolution of astrophysical discs.
The post is full time and fixed term, available from 1st January 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter until 30 December 2014 (24 months) with a possibility of an extension. It is funded by an STFC research grant. Starting salary will be £30,500 (year 1), £32,173 (year 2) and £33,944 (year 3 if applicable) per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days paid annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
