Job Announcement Text:

The Department of Earth and Space Science at Columbus State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the level of Assistant Professor to begin teaching in August 2013. Priority will be given to hiring a planetary astronomer, although theoretical astronomers may also be considered.  CSU’s B.S. in Earth and Space Science includes a degree track in Astrophysics and Planetary Geology, and the successful candidate will be able to support these programs.  Strong preference will be given to a candidate that can involve students in practical experiences or research in these fields, particularly research in planetary astronomy.

Teaching duties will primarily be in physics, including introductory physics and other courses to support departmental degree programs. Other job duties include recruiting students into the departmental majors, academic advising, assisting in programs to retain students, active involvement with and leadership in educational outreach activities (such as Engineering Night, Science Olympiad, Science Fair, and/or Astronomy Nights), and other service duties (such as service on department, college and university committees) necessary to build and maintain a vibrant and collegial department.  Candidates must also be committed to quality teaching and to continued scholarly and instructional development.

Applicants should possess a strong and demonstrated interest in teaching and hold a doctorate degree by the time of appointment.  The doctoral degree should be in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or related field.  The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding oral and written communication skills and exhibit a commitment to excellence in science education in a student-centered environment.  The successful candidate will be able to teach and work with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds. This search will remain open until a suitable candidate is selected.  Review of completed applications will begin on January 11, 2013.

Experience and/or research interests’ complementing other fields within the Department of Earth and Space Science is a plus.

Applications for part-time and full-time faculty positions must include transcripts of all academic work, and official transcripts must be presented prior to campus visit if selected for interview.  Applicants must have the ability to meet Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) requirements, in particular a minimum of 18 graduate hours in the teaching discipline. Columbus State University is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer, Committed to Diversity in Hiring.  See details about the department at http://ess.columbusstate.edu.
