Job Announcement Text:

Oxford University, Physics Department, Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics.

Applications are invited for two ERC-funded postdoctoral positions. The positions are available from 1 April 2013 although later commencement will be negotiable. The posts will be for two years with the possibility of extension for up to a further three years subject to performance.

The postholders will be based in the Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics. They will be expected to carry out the research program specified by the ERC grant “Extracting Science from Surveys of our Galaxy”: developing dynamical models of our Galaxy, predicting from them the results of surveys of our Galaxy, and drawing inferences about the structure and history of the Galaxy by comparing predictions with data. Initially the data employed will come from ground-based surveys, but a major goal is to prepare for data arriving from ESA’s Cornerstone Mission Gaia, scheduled for launch in the second half of 2013.

Interested candidates should have, or be about to obtain, a PhD in physics, mathematics or a related field, experience of scientific computing and an interest in Bayesian inference, and have produced high-quality scientific research. They should demonstrate the capacity for independent work.

There are no restrictions on eligibility; Nationals of any country are eligible to apply.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online.

Only applications received before noon on 4 January 2013 can be considered. You will be required to upload a CV and list of publications, statement of research interests, and details of three referees who should be asked to email letters of recommendation by the closing date to tpr@physics.ox.ac.uk.
