The Space and Remote Sensing group (ISR-2) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking an outstanding postdoctoral candidate to conduct research in real-time detection and classification of explosive astrophysical transients using time-series data. The overarching goal of this project is to build a system capable of collecting, assimilating, and "understanding" vast amounts of time-resolved photometry and actionable alert information from massive time-domain sky surveys such as the Palomar Transient Factory and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. Successful candidates will be expected to work closely with the RAPTOR/Thinking Telescopes group at LANL and interact with a diverse group of scientists engaged in world-class programs covering optical transient detection, computational astrophysics, planetary exploration, gamma-ray and radio astronomy, and space situational awareness.
Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, computer science or a closely related field, demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team, and excellence in scientific programming and/or instrumentation. Good verbal and written communication skills are important. The strongest candidates will have demonstrated success in conducting original research using machine learning and a deep understanding or interest in time-domain astronomy. Postdoctoral researchers are appointed for two years, renewable for a third year. Starting salary for postdoctoral research associates is $70,800. Candidates with exceptional qualifications will be considered for several distinguished fellowship positions.
