The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Alabama invites applications for a tenure-track position in astrophysics at the rank of assistant professor. The appointment will begin 16 August 2013.
We are particularly interested in applicants in observational or theoretical extragalactic astronomy and astrophysics. Topics of most interest include, but are not limited to, galaxy formation, galaxy interaction, galaxy clusters, dynamics of the early universe, the formation of the first stars, active galactic nuclei, and supernovae. Related research groups at UA are interested in extragalactic observation at all wavelengths, astrophysical sources of high-energy particles, computational stellar physics, interacting binary stars and their origins, and high-energy particle physics. The minimum qualifications for this position are a Ph.D. or equivalent, postdoctoral experience, scholarly publications, and experience with modern research techniques in astronomy and astrophysics. Candidates for this position are expected to have an outstanding research record and exhibit potential for effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate is expected to develop a high quality, externally funded research program, as well as teach and mentor at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
