Postdoctoral Research Position in Stellar Astrophysics
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) to work in collaboration with Dr. Jason Kalirai and Paul Goudfrooij. The successful applicant will participate in the analysis and interpretation of HST imaging data of nearby stellar populations, including star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. These multi-color observations are taken with the new high-resolution WFC3 camera on HST. The panchromatic color-magnitude and color-color diagrams should enable a clear interpretation of the nature of the multiple populations that have previously been observed in these systems, and also yield much more accurate fundamental parameters for the clusters. The implications of this (and other related) studies to star cluster formation and evolution will be explored.
In addition to the core research program, independent research projects in related areas will be encouraged (especially in collaboration with other STScI or JHU science staff members). The initial appointment will be for one year, starting as early as the spring of 2013 (or summer or fall). Renewals for future years, up to a total of three, will depend upon performance and availability of grant funds.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree and should have expertise and interest in crowded-field photometry and/or stellar astrophysics.
STScI, located on the Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, offers an excellent benefit package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment.
Applicants are requested to complete an on-line application through our website at http://www.stsci.edu/institute/employment and attach the following materials in the resume upload section (pdf format preferred): curriculum vitae; list of publications; and a brief (1-3 page) statement outlining relevant interest and experience. Please include #12-0174 in the file name(s). Also, applicants must arrange for three confidential letters of reference, referring to number #12-0174, to be sent directly to careers@stsci.edu.
Complete applications received by January 4th, 2013 will receive full consideration. Applicants are encouraged to attend the Long Beach AAS meeting for in-person interviews.
