The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile (DAA-PUC) invites applications for an immediate opening as a postdoctoral researcher working with Profs. Franz Bauer, Ezequiel Treister (Universidad de Concepción), and collaborators. The successful candidate will carry out observational studies of active galaxies near and far using data from NuSTAR, Chandra, XMM-Newton, optical and NIR IFUs, and other facilities. Research duties will include the analysis of active galaxy spectra, the publication of scientific results, and the planning/implementation of new observing programs.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, or related disciplines. a background in observational X-ray, optical or NIR astronomy would be advantageous.
The DAA-PUC provides a vibrant and productive international environment with approximately 16 faculty, >20 researchers, and >30 graduate students. While resident at DAA-PUC, the candidate will qualify as a member of the Chilean community with 10% privileged access on all telescopes in Chile, including ESO/Paranal's 4x8m VLT and 4m VISTA, La Silla's 3.5m NTT and 3.6m and 2.2m telescopes, Gemini-South 8m, Carnegie's 2.5m and Magellan 2x6.5m, CTIO's 4m (Blanco), SOAR 4m, as well as ASTE, APEX, and ALMA. Additionally, DAA-PUC hosts a 512-core supercomputer intended for numerical simulations, large databases, and data analyses.
The initial appointment is for two years, starting as early as March 2013, with extension pending performance and availability of funding.
