Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position with Professor Michael Cushing in the field of brown dwarf astrophysics. The successful applicant will join the Cycle 20 HST GO program "Completing the Census of Ultracool Brown Dwarfs in the Solar Neighborhood using HST/WFC3". The primary goal of this 125 orbit program is to characterize the local population of Y dwarfs using WFC3 grism spectroscopy. The position will involve active participation in all phases of the project: data reduction, analysis, modeling, and publication of results in close collaboration with the WISE brown dwarf science team.
The appointment is initially for one year, but is expected to extend to two dependent on funding and performance. The University Toledo astronomy program has 8 faculty members, 4 postdocs, and 14 graduate students. The University of Toledo is a member of the Discovery Channel Telescope Consortium so the successful applicate will also have access to the Discovery Channel Telescope, a new 4.3 meter telescope situated outside of Flagstaff, AZ.
Candidates must hold, or anticipate, a Ph.D. or equivalent in physics or astronomy. Related research and experience in the reduction of HST data will be emphasized. To apply, please send a vita, bibliography, and 1-2 page statement of research as a single file, and arrange to have three letters of reference sent via email to email@example.com, by January 15, 2012.
