The Institute of Astronomy (IoA), Cambridge expects to fill vacancies for one or more postdoctoral research associates to join a research team based at the Kavli Institute for Cosmology, Cambridge (KICC). The team will study the Emergence of Structure during the Epoch of Reionization supported by an ERC Advanced Grant (PI: Martin Haehnelt, senior research team member: Richard McMahon). The research topic will be interpreted broadly to range from the first galaxies and massive black holes to the reionization of hydrogen and helium to the physical state of the Intergalactic Medium and its relation to galaxies in the post-reionization epoch. Theoretical/numerical and observational candidates working in these areas are encouraged to apply. For numerical candidates experience with radiative transfer simulations would be a particularly valuable asset. For observational candidates there is the opportunity to get involved in follow-up observations of high-redshift quasars from the DES and VISTA surveys and experience with quasar absorption line spectroscopy would be of advantage. The IoA/KICC offer a vibrant research environment and have excellent access to observational and high-performance computing facilities.
Applicants must have a PhD in Astronomy or a related field or have submitted by the time of appointment. The current Research Associate salary scale is £27,578 to £35,938 p.a., depending on experience, plus superannuation benefits. In exceptional cases appointment of more experienced candidates at the level of senior research associate (£37,012 to £46,846) is possible. The University values diversity and is committed to equality of opportunity. The University has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.
Applications must be made via the on-line system accessible via the link above. The names and contact details of three referees are a necessary part of the submission. Referees will be contacted automatically following an application but applicants are strongly advised to prepare nominated referees for the need to provide references (in response to the online generated request) in good time. If you have any queries about your application, please email pdrec(at)ast.cam.ac.uk
