The Department of Astronomy at the University of Virginia invites applications for a postdoctoral Research Associate position in Near Field Cosmology. The successful applicant will work with Prof. Nitya Kallivayalil on a large dataset focused on tidal streams in the Milky Way. Both observational and theoretical investigations will be explored, but experience in astrometry, photometry and image analysis will be especially well-suited to the position. In addition, the candidate will have access to the considerable resources available at UVa, including the department's close relationship with NRAO, its membership in SDSS-III, and its access to the Apache Point Observatory, Steward Observatory and the Large Binocular Telescope.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Astronomy or Physics. The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed for an additional two, on-year increments, contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
The start date is Sept 2013, but is negotiable. To apply, please submit a candidate profile online through Jobs@UVa (https://jobs.virginia.edu) and electronically attach the following: cover letter, CV, and a statement of research experience and interests. Please search on posting number 0611174.
Also arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent separately to nitya.kallivayalil@yale.edu. Review of applications will begin on Feb 1, 2013; however, the position will remain open until filled.
The University of Virginia is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Women, Minorities, Veterans and Persons with Disabilities are encouraged to apply.
