The LEDA project seeks to constrain the initial conditions for cosmic reionization by detecting the 21cm Hydrogen line at redshift ~20. LEDA will deploy a large-N FPGA-GPU correlator to the Long Wavelength Array, apply a GPU-accelerated calibration and imaging system, and extract the sky-averaged HI spectrum. This is frontier cosmology.
The opening at Harvard College Observatory is immediate. Appointment at the postdoctoral fellow or more senior level of research associate is possible for particularly well-qualified candidates more than 3 years beyond their PhD.
Responsibilities may include fieldwork and instrument commissioning, computational and astronomical technique development, and data analysis.
Experience in the following will be viewed especially favorably: cosmological data analysis and parameter estimation, low-frequency instrumentation and science including pulsars and transients, radio interferometry theory and practice, polarimetry, algorithm development, high performance computing, and GPUs. Experience with Linux, C/C++, and scripting is required. The present appointment is renewable for up to two years contingent on performance and availability of funds. The salary is $57,000. This is a benefited position.
Candidates should submit via e-mail before Jan. 1 to Dr. Greenhill a CV, bibliography, statement of research accomplishments and interests, and earliest possible start date. Three letters of recommendation are also required, submitted via e-mail. Harvard is an Equal Opportunity/ Affirmative Action employer. Applications from women and minorities are encouraged.
