Postdoctoral Fellowship in Galaxy Evolution:
Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research position at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) to work with Dr. Jennifer Lotz on connecting observations of galaxy morphology and structure to predictions of galaxy assembly from numerical simulations. The fellow will have the opportunity to work with the legacy HST extra-galactic data-sets, including CANDELS, as well as state of the art numerical simulations of galaxy evolution. The planned project will involve collaborators from the UC Santa theory group, and the astrostatistics group at Carnegie Mellon/U. Pittsburgh. The postdoctoral fellow will expect to advance the main project goals, and will be encouraged to define and lead new projects related to galaxy evolution and structure.
Applicants with expertise in image analysis, quantitative morphology, IDL/python, numerical simulations, and/or a interest in astrostatistics are especially encouraged to apply. A Ph.D. in astronomy or a closely related field is required.
The expected start date for the position will be Summer 2013, although an earlier start date is possible. Initial appointments are for one year, with expected renewal up to 3 years (subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding). STScI, located on Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, offers dynamic and stimulating scientific community, an excellent benefit package, competitive salaries. Financial and logistical assistance for relocation to the Baltimore area is available.
Applicants are requested to complete an on-line application through our website at http://www.stsci.edu/institute/employment and attach the following materials in the resume upload section (pdf format preferred): curriculum vitae; list of publications; and a brief (1-3 page) statement of research accomplishments and relevant technical experience. Please include #12-0178 in the file name(s). Also, applicants must arrange for three confidential letters of reference, referring to number #12-0178, to be sent directly to lotz@stsci.edu. Complete applications received by January 31, 2013, will receive full consideration.
