Leon Van Speybroeck Post-Doctoral Fellowship in X-ray Optics

We invite applications for the Leon Van Speybroeck (LVS) post-doctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) to participate in the development of high angular resolution X-ray optics. The Fellowship is named after Dr. Leon Van Speybroeck, the Telescope Scientist on NASA's Chandra and Einstein X-ray Observatories, whose technical leadership resulted in the exquisite Chandra images seen today.

An LVS fellow will work in SAO's X-ray optics group led by Dr. Paul Reid, and will contribute to design, development, alignment and testing of adjustable X-ray optical systems. He / she will also support follow-on activities potentially including the development of a sub-orbital mission to space-qualify the X-ray optical system. The Fellow will work in a laboratory environment but should also be knowledgeable in computer programming for modeling and analysis of data. The LVS fellowship appointment is for three years. There is a possibility afterwards of joining the SAO optics development team as a staff researcher, pending review of progress and availability of funding.

The applicant must have (or complete in early 2013) a PhD in astronomy, physics, engineering, optics, or a related field. Ideal candidates should have experience in optical, structural, and overall performance analysis of telescopes. Knowledge of the unique requirements of space telescopes is advantageous.

This position is available immediately, but the starting date is negotiable. The funding for 2013-2014 will consist of a stipend of approximately $66,500 and a modest personal research budget up to $8,000 per year for conference travel and small equipment or computer purchases. The appointee can receive the health insurance plan offered to SAO postdoctoral fellows.

Applicants should send electronic copies of their resume, a two page summary of their research, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent directly to Dr. Reid, preid@cfa.harvard.edu. Applications received by March 1, 2013 will be given full consideration.

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity in the workplace.

Included Benefits:

Medical insurance, vacation.
