Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Scholar position in astrochemistry of molecular clouds in massive star forming regions at the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center (IPAC) at Caltech. The successful applicant will work with Dr. Patrick Morris at IPAC and Dr. John Pearson at JPL on the formation and excitation of atoms and fundamental molecules in Orion and similar regions, involving the investigation of chemical processes in the diffuse interstellar medium which are ultimately important for the understanding of star formation. Particular focus will be on modeling formation pathways of C/C+ and CH-bearing molecules from high resolution Herschel spectroscopy as a key to understanding the balance of turbulence energy and UV-field formation pumping to define basic hydrocarbon chemistries in diffuse clouds. Investigations will further include contrasting the chemistry and properties of the dust in massive SFRs with the dust and gas around evolved massive stars, relying on Spitzer and Herschel imaging and spectroscopy of massive O/WR/LBV circumstellar environments.
We seek an individual with a PhD in astronomy, physics, theoretical chemistry, chemical physics, laboratory astrophysics, or equivalent, and with an interest in implementing and using the tools of chemical dynamics in astrophysical environments. A background in dust formation and radiative transfer methods is also highly desirable. The ability to incorporate the latest laboratory measurements of the gas and dust species relevant in varied galactic environments is essential. Responsibilities will include reduction of Herschel and Spitzer data, analysis and interpretation, and publication of scientific results. Candidates should have obtained by the starting date a Ph.D. in one or more of the areas listed above that are relevant to these projects. Initially the appointment is for one year, based on current projected funding, with a possible extension to a second year if funding becomes available. To apply, please send resume, publication list, names and contact information of three references, and a statement of research. Applications should be sent via email to pmorris@ipac.caltech.edu. Deadline for receipt of applications is 31 January 2013.
