Job Announcement Text:

The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AlP) and the University of Potsdam (UP) invite applications for eight PhD positions within the newly established Leibniz Graduate School for Quantitative Spectroscopy in Astrophysics. The Graduate School is embedded in an existing Structured Research and Training doctorate program in Astronomy and Astrophysics at UP. The program’s key components are supervision through thesis committees, mentoring by senior students, joint colloquia, and dedicated teaching and training courses covering scientific topics as well as soft skills. Currently, about 40 doctoral students are enrolled in the UP astronomy and astrophysics doctorate program.

The appointment is for three years. The hours of work per week for the position amount to 20 hours. The salary scale is TV-L 13. A successful candidate must hold a Master degree or equivalent at the beginning of the appointment. AIP and UP are equal opportunity employers and as such, consider individuals for employment according to their skills, abilities, and experience. Handicapped applicants will be given preference in case of equal suitability. AIP and UP strive to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and specifically encourage female applicants to apply for this position.

Applicants should send their curriculum vitae, an abstract of their Master thesis, a recent academic transcript with the (expected) graduation date noted, and the names and addresses of two persons that could send a letter of recommendation. Topics of the PhD theses along with other information regarding the application are provided on the Graduate School’s web page (http://www.aip.de/en/for-students/leibniz-graduate-school). The candidates should also provide a ranked list of those three topics matching most closely their research interests. Electronic applications as a single PDF file are preferred. Review of applications will begin 2013 March 1 and continue until the positions are filled.
