The Sydney Institute for Astronomy is a large active group with wide-ranging expertise in astronomy. Our researchers are engaged in answering fundamental questions about the nature of the Universe. Broader opportunities also exist via the national and international partnerships within the ARC Centre of Excellence for All-sky Astrophysics (CAASTRO).
Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to study the giant star-forming region, the Carina Nebula, with particular emphasis on providing new detailed images at radio wavelengths. You will be based at Sydney University and will work with a team of national and international astronomers. A large database of relevant observations from a pilot study already exists. The goal of the project is to generate a physical model of the Carina Nebula, particularly of the gas, magnetic fields and any fossil supernova remnants that might have triggered a new generation of stars. Recent optical, X-ray and infrared campaigns have produced spectacular images. Comparable images from the radio band have been missing until now. You will have the opportunity to fill this gap in the multi-wavelength story.
You will have:
• a PhD in Astrophysics or closely-related discipline
• published research in refereed journals
• expertise in radio astronomy observational techniques
• experience in the analysis and interpretation of radio interferometric data.
This is an opportunity to lead the imaging project and pursue related studies on massive star formation.
The position is full-time for two years, subject to completion of a satisfactory probationary period for new appointees. It may be available part-time for Australian citizens or permanent residents. A third year may be offered, subject to funding, need and performance. Some assistance with relocation expenses and visa sponsorship will be available if required.
All applications must be submitted via the University of Sydney careers website. To apply and for more information go to sydney.edu.au/positions and search for reference number 1928/1112
Closing Date: 31 January 2013 (11:30 pm Sydney Time)
