Job Announcement Text:

Applications are invited for an STFC-funded post-doctoral position in the School of Physics \& Astronomy at Cardiff University, to work with Professor Anthony Whitworth.

The aim of the project is to model the formation of stars, and in particular the role of feedback from massive stars, in terms of (i) the observed morphologies of H{\sc ii} regions, stellar-wind bubbles and supernova remnants, in different environments and in different continuum and line radiations, (ii) the distribution and intrinsic properties of the stars whose formation they trigger, (iii) the efficiency with which kinetic energy is injected into the interstellar medium, and (iv) the extent to which ionising radiation and gas escape out of the galactic disc, into the halo and beyond.

Applicants should have a PhD at the start of the position. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in numerical astrophysics, especially self-gravitating (magneto-) hydrodynamics and/or radiation transport.

Cardiff has an established star formation group, recently strengthened by the appointment of Drs. Berengere Parise and Nicolas Peretto to faculty positions, and the appointment of Dr. Padelis Papadopoulos to an Ernest Rutherford Fellowship. The School also has groups working on galaxies, cosmology, gravitational waves, and astronomical instrumentation. The University has recently upgraded its supercomputing facilities with the installation of the 20-teraflop RAVEN machine.

The position is available from 1st April 2013, for 36 months. The salary will be in the range GBPounds 30,122 to GBPounds 35,938 (Grade 6), depending on qualifications and experience. There are additional funds for travel, consumables and desk/lap-top computers.

Further particulars and application forms should be obtained from

The closing date for applications is 31st January 2013. Informal enquiries can be made to Professor Whitworth at ant@astro.cf.ac.uk.
