Regular, 100% FTE, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Joint Astronomy Centre, located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and availability of funds. Funding is currently in place until September 2014.
The JAC operates two of the world's most powerful telescopes near the summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii: the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT).
This position is in the Scientific Computing Group (SCG) which supports both telescopes and provides software for specifying observations and the analysis of taking raw data and turning it into scientific meaningful products. The systems developed are used worldwide by a diverse set of users.
Duties: A Level 3 Scientific Programmer is responsible for the specification, design, development, and support of a range of particularly complex software systems and is required to make judgments on relative priorities of assigned projects. Holders of a Level 3 may supervise and mentor other level Scientific Programmers.
Required: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Astronomy, Physics, or Computer Science. Expert knowledge of UNIX. Must possess the following: expert skill in (2) of the following computer languages: Perl, Python, C, C++ or Fortran; expert skill in applying software analysis, design, and development methodologies; ability to author technical publications.
Desired: Experience managing small software development groups as they are developing complex software systems.
Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet, and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination.
