The Excellence Cluster "Origin and Structure of the Universe" at the Technische Universität München (TUM) and the Ludwig-Maximilians University (LMU) invites applications for 4 staff scientists to support the activities of the Computational Center for Particle and Astrophysics (C2PAP). C2PAP is a new collaborative element that focuses on scientific research at the computationally intensive frontier. Scientific projects range from particle physics simulations and studies using data from the Large Hadron Collider to astrophysical simulations and multi-wavelength studies of cosmology and structure formation in the Universe, using data from, e.g. the South Pole Telescope, the Dark Energy Survey, eROSITA and Planck.
C2PAP’s success depends on the new team members, who will work alongside Universe Cluster scientists, supporting the development of new algorithms and managing their deployment on C2PAP hardware. Our primary hardware is the newly launched SuperMUC system at the Leibniz Rechenzentrum (LRZ) with a 2048 core extension dedicated to C2PAP activities. Moreover, we plan to investigate the use of new computing architectures, such as GPUs, INTEL MIC/PHI or ARM, for our applications in particle and astrophysics.
We are seeking applicants with experience in high performance scientific computing. The team members will focus in the areas of simulation, data processing and calibration. We expect to invest significant effort in developing new algorithms that improve the accuracy and efficiency of codes both in astrophysics and particle physics. More specifically, we seek: (1) staff scientist with experience in data processing and databases within an astronomy/cosmology context (PhD preferred), (2) staff scientist with background in numerical physics and experience in parallel coding and algorithm development (PhD preferred), (3) staff scientist in particle physics with experience in high-throughput data processing and data reduction, used e. g. at LHC (PhD preferred), and (4) IT expert for particle physics with background in algorithm development, experience with databases or novel computing platforms.
Application documents (in PDF format) including a cover letter describing your interest in this position, a CV, your PhD/diploma certificate, a list of publications, and a detailed list of IT and computing experience should be uploaded under www.universe-cluster.de/about-us/jobs/. Please have three letters of recommendation sent to job@universe-cluster.de. We especially encourage applications from women. Disabled persons will be given preference to other equally qualified applicants. The fixed term appointments will end on 31st October 2017, with a salary according to the German public service pay agreement (TV-L E13). Application deadline is 28th February 2013.
