Job Announcement Text:

The Queen's and the Observatory and University of Padova have a long standing collaboration on supernova studies through projects on the  European Southern Observatory and La Palma telescopes (e.g. the Italian TNG and UK's WHT telescopes). We are currently major partners in the PESSTO Survey.

This scholarship is aimed available to students of all nationalities and aimed at high performing undergraduate students in their final year.  The student will work on aspects of either the PESSTO survey (www.pessto.org) or or other observing programs involving the two teams.  She/he will work at both Padova Observatory and University and Queen's University on a breakdown to be decided depending on the PhD project.

Examples of possible science topics are:

  • The extremes of interacting supernovae : Stefano Benetti (INAF/Padova) and Rubina Kotak (Queen's) lead this PESSTO project on luminous IIn supernovae and their relation to the fainter interacting supernovae of unknown physical origin (e.g the SN2008s-like objects, luminous red novae, LBV-like eruptions).
  • Stripped-envelope supernovae: Pastorello (INAF/Padova)
  • Faint and low energy type II supernovae : Massimo Turatto (INAF/Padova) lead of PESSTO science project
  • Statistical Analysis of PESSTO classifications : Enrico Cappellaro (INAF/Padova) lead of PESSTO science project

Students must already be competent in the english language and non-native english speakers will be required to demonstrate this competency either through interview and/or with an official score in the IELTS (International English Language Testing System or TOEFL iBt (Teaching of English as a foreign Language (internet Based  Test)).

Further advanced language training (in English and Italian) is available during the PhD programme, as well as training in all the technical expertise required for this observational based programme. The student may be eligible for a European/International PhD title upon agreement among the two Universities.
