The Max-Planck-Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in Garching (near Munich) invites applications for the position of the
Head of Electrical Engineering
MPE is a world-leading institute in the development of ground- and space-based instrumentation for infrared/submm-, high energy-, and optical astronomy. We are Principal Investigator of several major experiments for large ground based telescopes (e.g. VLT(I), LBT, E-ELT) and space missions (e.g. XMM-Newton, Herschel, eROSITA). Our instrument program deploys state-of the art electrical engineering and manufacturing.
Together with your engineering team you will be responsible for the electrical design of our ambitious instruments. You will follow all project phases from the conceptual design up to the final assembly and tests. You will further represent MPE in technical matters towards our industrial partners and international agencies (ESO, ESA), and you will coordinate the placement of orders and supervise the contractual relationships.
Applicants should have a M.Eng., M.Sc. or Ph.D. in electrical engineering or in an equivalent field and should have several years of experience in the electrical design of scientific instruments, ideally in an international research institution. We further expect professional expertise in one or several areas of analog- and digital design, electronic drive systems, dynamics control, CE-certification, EMC, software design, and the willingness to familiarize yourself with new technologies. Ideally you should have already supervised a small team of engineers and technicians. It is self-evident that you are fluent in English and German.
MPE is offering an outstanding scientific environment in the booming Campus of Garching, hosting multiple Departments of the Technical University of Munich, several Max-Planck-Institutes, and the European Southern Observatory. Together with our project scientists and engineers you will participate in the most exciting frontiers of space technology and astronomy. Please visit
www.mpe.mpg.de for more information about the institute.
We offer an attractive renumeration package and social benefits in accordance with the regulations for public employees. The MPE encourages applications from women, minorities, and disabled persons.
For additional information please contact Mr. Tarantik (
tarantik@mpe.mpg.de). Please send your application by email to
jobs@mpe.mpg.de or by mail to Personnel Department, Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik, Gießenbachstraße, 85748 Garching, Germany.
