The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University invites applications for the position of the Director of Abrams Planetarium. The Abrams Planetarium is located on the MSU campus, and serves as the focal point for outreach through extensive school
visits and teaching through astronomy labs for large undergraduate classes. We also look forward to growth in collaboration with outreach efforts in science departments on campus and in connections to research through the visualization capabilities of the planetarium. We are seeking candidates who can lead the planetarium in these areas and build connections across campus to achieve these goals.
A PhD in astronomy, physics, or science education is strongly preferred. Ideally the candidate will have demonstrated success in leading funded astronomy education and outreach efforts. The Abrams Planetarium is located in a newly refurbished building in the center of the Michigan State campus and is planning to obtain a state of the art digital projector. Administratively, Abrams is part of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, which has a vibrant program in astronomy as well as in nuclear, particle, and condensed matter physics. MSU is also a world leader in science education, and campus initiatives in this area include CREATE for STEM (www.create4stem.msu.edu).
Applications for this position will consist of a CV, contact information for three references, and a statement regarding the applicant's experience and plans relevant to the planetarium in areas such as education, outreach, research in these areas, and visualization. Applications should be uploaded at jobs.msu.edu for posting number 7326. Inquiries about the position may be sent to Steve Zepf (zepf@pa.msu.edu), chair of the search committee. We will begin reviewing applications April 1, 2013, anticipating a start date in the summer of 2013. Consideration of applications will continue until the position is filled.
