About American Astronomical Society:

The American Astronomical Society (AAS), established 1899, is the major organization of professional astronomers in North America. Job Description:

This person will primarily be responsible for custom Drupal 7 module development and customizations to Drupal 7 sites. This will involve some integration between Drupal and iMIS, our membership management system. This person will also have the opportunity to develop other related projects to create interfaces with multiple systems and databases. Some time will be initially be spent helping migrate a few modules and themes to Drupal 7 from Drupal 6. This person will be responsible for fully documenting any new Drupal modules and customizations along with other related projects. As new features and tools are created or added it is expected that this person will be able to train others on how to use them.

Education, Training and Work Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree (or higher) in Information Systems or Computer Science is required. Demonstrated ability acquired through on the job experience is acceptable. MIS or Computer Science major or equivalent (MIS). Web Development certification or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of experience working on web based development projects
  • At least 3 years Drupal experience
  • Proven experience of Drupal development (primarily backend)

Required Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of Drupal module and theme development. Must have a strong background in programming in PHP and the Drupal API.
  • Interfacing with other systems and databases using SOAP, REST, and SQL.
  • Ability to properly use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to markup and render content.
  • Advanced knowledge of databases and database design. Specifically MySQL, MS SQL, and PostgreSQL databases.
  • Must have good problem solving and code-reading skills (must be able to read, analyze, modify and comment other people's code).
  • Experience working in a heavily mixed OS (Windows, Mac, Linux) and web browser environment (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Internet Explorer 7 - 10).
  • Be independent/self-motivated and have good problem solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in migrating from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7.
  • Knowledge and experience with other content management systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of HTML/XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Ability to manage LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) setups
  • Experience with Varnish, Nginx, Mailman, and Postfix are a plus
  • Ability to program in Perl, Python, ColdFusion, and .NET are a plus
  • iMIS experience is a plus

Salary: $55,000 - $85,000
