ADAPTIVE OPTICS SYSTEM ENGINEER (AO188/Laser Guide Star) – ID# 13372. 

Regular, Full-Time, Limited Term (approximately five (5) years in duration with possibility of extension), RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Subaru Telescope, located in Hilo, Hawaii.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 


DUTIES:  Participates in support of the Subaru Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics (LGSAO) system.  Performs a wide variety of technical tasks such as, troubleshooting, problem solving, optical alignment, component replacement, observing pre-checks, etc.  Coordinates the LGSAO support team consisting of hardware and software engineers, technicians, and scientists.  Serves as a focal point among the support team.  Trains observatory staff in the operation and maintenance of the LGSAO system.  Defines and prioritizes tasks for the team.  Works with Science Operations to translate scientific and operational requirements into technical requirements for the support team.  Prepares and maintains documentation such as engineering drawings, software, maintenance and operations procedures.  Prepares and maintains support contracts. 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:  EDUCATION:  PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy, Physics, or a related field.  EXPERIENCE:  At least five (5) years of experience in astronomical instrumentation.  Experience must include at least three (3) years with adaptive optics systems.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Wide knowledge of adaptive optics system, including adaptive optics performance analysis.  Fundamental technical knowledge of key components for an adaptive optics system such as, wavefront sensor, deformable mirror, wavefront control system, and laser guide star system.  Knowledge of optical design and alignment.  Basic knowledge of project management and contracting for astronomical instrumentation.  Ability to manage on-going operations, including planning, scheduling, coordination, documentation, contracting and maintaining operational readiness pertaining to astronomical instrumentation.  Good written and oral communication skills in English. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle with manual transmission.  PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Post Offer/Employment Condition:  Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a post offer high-altitude medical examination. 

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Previous involvement in astronomical instrumentation, including system design and hardware and software development.  Knowledge of physical optics.  Experience in optical design.  Experience with maintaining a high power laser.
