The MPA is the major German institution dedicated to theoretical and interpretational research in astrophysics and cosmology. It is
situated 10 kilometers north of Munich on a campus shared with the MPI for Extraterrestrial Physics, the headquarters of the European
Southern Observatory and several other research institutes and university departments. Current areas of interest include the structure
and evolution of single and multiple stars, stellar atmospheres and spectroscopy, supernovae, origin of the elements, star formation,
accretion theory, high energy astrophysics, computational fluid dynamics, galactic structure and evolution, the physics of active galactic nuclei,
gravitational lensing, formation and clustering of galaxies, galaxy clusters, cosmic microwave background studies, physical cosmology and particle astrophysics. Further information may be found on our web page
This year the MPA is seeking 1-2 postdoctoral fellows who work at the interface between theory and observations in galaxy formation.
The positions will be awarded for three years, but can be extended for up to five years in total. Salaries are paid either at German civil
service rates (gross annual pre-tax income including health insurance contributions are currently in the range 40.000 EUR to 50.000 EUR, depending on post-doctoral experience) or through a tax-free stipend at equivalent take-home level.
Interested scientists are invited to apply electronically via
Candidates are asked to upload a 3-5 page research proposal outlining their ideas for specific project(s) to be carried out over a three
