The Stromlo Fellow is expected to pursue a vigorous, full-time, self-directed research program in astronomy and to provide academic leadership in their field of research. This is a five-year, fixed-term appointment having a minimum salary of AU$85,448. The fellowship carries with it an annual research grant of AU$15,000 and is available from early 2014.
The School has access to 15 nights per year on the Keck 10-metre telescopes and operates Siding Spring Observatory (SSO), which includes the ANU 2.3-metre telescope with an optical integral field spectrograph (WiFeS), the 1.2-metre UK Schmidt Telescope with a 150-fibre wide-field spectrograph, and the 1.3-metre SkyMapper telescope, which is performing a 6-colour imaging survey of the southern sky, with additional time available for individual research projects. The successful candidate will also have access to Australia’s national radio and optical/IR facilities (including Gemini, Magellan, AAT, ATCA, Parkes and ASKAP) as well as world-class supercomputing facilities. RSAA is a foundation member of the Giant Magellan Telescope consortium and is participating in the Murchison Wide-field Array consortium.
The Stromlo Fellow will have the opportunity to supervise graduate students and to apply for additional research funding through the competitive grant schemes of the Australian Research Council.
Candidates will preferably have a background in one of the current research themes of the RSAA, which include: Stellar Astrophysics, Cosmology, Galactic Archaeology, Black Hole Phenomena and Planetary Science. However serious consideration will be given to outstanding applicants in any field of astronomy and astrophysics.
We expect that the successful candidate will be at most about five years past their PhD, will have demonstrated an excellent track record of independent research, and will have outlined an outstanding research program to be carried out during the term of the Fellowship.
To apply please submit a statement outlining an outstanding research program to be carried out during the term of the Fellowship along with your CV/Resume including a written statement addressing the selection criteria through the ANU Website before 1 December 2013, Reference Number A418-13TM.
