The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC, Tenerife, Spain) invites applications for ONE Postdoctoral contract on “Cosmology and/or Galaxy Clusters” within the framework of the "SEVERO OCHOA Programme" (SEV-2011-0187); a prestigious recognition awarded to the IAC as a leading research institute in Spain, and supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.
The successful candidate will have access to all telescopic and supercomputing facilities in the Canary Islands, including the 10.4m GTC. Ample travel funding is available.
Fellows will: 1) carry out observation programmes, processing and analysis of optical/infrared images and spectroscopy for the study of new galaxy clusters detected by the Planck satellite, 2) develop of specific tools for identification of new cluster galaxies in optical/infrared images: overdensities, color-magnitude cuts, spatial distributions, redshift determinations, 3) apply these tools to optical/infrared images for tracing new Planck clusters and also to archival galaxy cluster images. They will also participate in scientific working groups of the Euclid space mission.
The applicant should hold a PhD in Astrophysics. High value will be given to experience in astronomical observing with Infrared and optical telescopes; processing optical and infrared imaging and spectroscopy; observational experience in the study of galaxy clusters and/or luminous red galaxies; using methods to estimate photometric redshift; specific techniques for the detection of cluster galaxies at intermediate/high redshift.
Remuneration: The gross annual salary is 32.886 €
Duration: One year.
The application procedure is explained on the web site. All documents, including the recommendation letters, must be received before the application deadline: October 31, 2013.
