Job Announcement Text:

The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC, Tenerife, Spain) invites applications for ONE Postdoctoral position on “Numerical Simulations in Galaxies” within the framework of the "SEVERO OCHOA Programme" (SEV-2011-0187), a prestigious recognition awarded to the IAC as a leading research institute in Spain, and supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness.

The successful candidate will develop software for the analysis of astronomical data, in particular  software for the determination of physical parameters of stars and galaxies starting from WEAVE  spectra, and participate in the coordination of the different software packages related to the reduction, analysis, and archival of WEAVE data. WEAVE is a versatile fiber-fed multi-object spectrograph for the 4.2m WHT at La Palma.

The applicant must have extensive experience in software development for reduction and analysis of astronomical spectra, and should be comfortable using high-level programming languages such as IDL, MATLAB or Python. The position requires good communication skills in English, and availability to travel regularly to La Palma and Europe. The candidate will join the WEAVE project group at the IAC’s headquarters in La Laguna, Tenerife, where he/she will have the opportunity to interact with an extensive network of international researchers in and outside the WEAVE project.  The candidate will also have access to the IAC’s telescopic and supercomputing facilities, including the 10.4m GTC telescope.

The applicant should hold a PhD in Astrophysics. Experience in software development for major spectroscopic surveys, such as the SDSS, RAVE, or Gaia-ESO, will be highly valued.
