The Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg Germany, is seeking an ambitious, highly qualified candidate to fill a postdoctoral research position in the independent Research Group "Galaxy Formation in a Dark Universe" lead by Dr. Andrea Macciò.
Currently 3 post-docs and 6 PhD students are working in this group on topics ranging from Large Scale Structure and Cosmology to detailed simulations of galaxy formation and stellar/AGN feedback. (more information at: http://www.mpia-hd.mpg.de/~maccio/GFG/home.html).
The successful candidate is expected to carry out research based on theoretical and/or numerical work in the field galaxy formation and evolution in a cosmological context. Applicants with familiarity with theoretical/numerical modelling of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and/or Star Formation and feedback are particularly encouraged to apply. The post-doc will have direct access to a 1000 core Infiniband Cluster dedicated to the theory group at MPIA to run simulations and to other supercomputer facilities at the Rechenszentrum in Garching and at the Jülich Forschungszentrum in Stuttgart.
At present, the MPIA Galaxies and Cosmology department is pursuing a wide range of astrophysical research projects including membership in large observing programs like PanSTARRS, SDSS IV, and Gaia; radio observations of galaxies near and far using the VLA and ALMA; and privileged access at several observatories.
Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field. The appointment will be for an initial period of two years with a likely extension to a total of three years. The MPIA offers a stimulating work environment, and provides funds for computing, publications, travel, etc.
The starting date is expected to be no later than the Fall of 2014, but earlier dates are possible.
Candidates should send a curriculum vitae, publication list, and a brief statement of research interest by December 15, 2013, and arrange for three letters of reference to be provided separately by the same date. All applications and references letters need to be submitted using our online application system at:
Candidates should first register with our online system to generate a registration code, which must be sent to referees for letter submission. CV, publication list, and research statement must be concatenated into a single PDF file.
